Components and Types of a Business Plan

Components and Types of a Business Plan

A business plan explains the opportunity, customers, operations, team, finances, risks and implementation strategy. Its depth depends on the audience and decision.

Learning objectives

  • Describe major business-plan components.
  • Differentiate start-up, internal, strategic and funding plans.
  • Evaluate whether sections are logically aligned.

Core components

SectionCentral question

Types of plans

Start-up plan

Tests viability and guides launch.

Funding plan

Emphasises capital need, returns, repayment and risk.

Operational plan

Details short-term activities, targets and responsibilities.

Strategic plan

Sets long-term direction, priorities and competitive position.

Scenario: home-care service

The plan must specify eligible clients, clinical scope, staffing, travel zones, referral arrangements, documentation, infection prevention, pricing, demand, insurance, scheduling, quality indicators and emergency escalation—not merely state that home care is needed.

Internal consistency

Customer numbers must match operational capacity; staffing must match the service promise; prices must cover costs; requested funding must follow from the cash-flow forecast. Contradictory sections weaken credibility.

Common errors

  • Overstating market size.
  • Hiding competition and risks.
  • Using profit instead of cash flow.
  • Writing an executive summary before testing assumptions and never revising it.
Exam tip: name each section and explain the decision it supports.

Review questions

  1. Outline a plan for a rehabilitation service.
  2. Compare funding and operational plans.
  3. Identify four consistency checks.
