How to use the Obstetrics and Gynaecology curriculum
Obstetrics and Gynaecology combines continuity of care with time-sensitive clinical decisions. The Year III material should build a safe approach to history, examination and normal pregnancy care; the later material should deepen clinical reasoning, procedural understanding and recognition of complications.
A practical learning sequence
- Start with respectful communication, reproductive history and a structured obstetric and gynaecological examination.
- Connect antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care so that risk assessment is carried forward rather than repeated as disconnected facts.
- Group common presentations by symptom—such as pain, bleeding, discharge, amenorrhoea or a pelvic mass—then build focused differentials and investigations.
- Review emergencies by their early warning features, immediate priorities, referral pathway and the limits of a student’s role.
- Use senior-year topics to practise concise case summaries, interpretation of findings and management planning under supervision.
